Habitat
On le trouve dans l'ouest de l'Amérique du Nord, où il niche dans du bois mort, y compris des bûches mortes dans les forêts, ainsi que dans des maisons humaines.
Comme ravageurs
Les fourmis charpentières endommageront les maisons en y nichant. Ils creuseront des tunnels dans le bois pour agrandir leurs espaces de vie et peuvent entraîner des dommages structurels. L'infestation dans la maison est généralement une colonie satellite, la principale se trouvant à une centaine de mètres ou plus dans une souche ou un autre bois pourri. Lorsque les colonies commencent à s'établir dans les maisons, elles peuvent commencer petites (quelques centaines de membres) mais peuvent atteindre plusieurs dizaines de milliers. Il peut y avoir 20 colonies satellites ou plus.
